Korea, K-Pop, and CIS

Written by Mr. Robertson

At CIS, it is our goal to provide students with as many opportunities as possible to gain exciting memories as well as access to excellent educational experiences. During the week of May 10th to May 19th, several students from CIS went on a trip to Korea arranged by our instructors with a university local to Korea. The theme of the tour was ‘stage production’ which involves learning to dance, produce videos, apply makeup, and otherwise teach the students all the behind the scenes work that goes into being a Kpop Idol.

Arriving in Korea must have been a mixture of feelings: fatigue from a long flight but excitement to see, hear, smell, and feel a place that many of them dreamed about. Of course, right from arrival, it was time to work. This was not traveling to play; this was an educational excursion. Dance practice hit them right away, multiple days, then studying camera work, video production, professional makeup techniques, and culture. Their instructors were friendly and encouraging, but they were there to learn what it is like to be an idol, right? At the end, not one student returned with any illusions that fame was easy or simple.

But it could not be all hard work without a little play, right? The students were also introduced to Korean culture. Food? I am sure there were many a Korean Fried Chicken eaten. Spicy Tteok-bokki must have flowed like a river. There are rumors of excellent Korean tacos. But what was probably even more impressive was the day they got to try on authentic traditional Korean hanbok! They looked like something right out of a period Kdrama on TV. Were they extras in “Bon Appétit, Your Majesty”? They even visited some cultural sites and got to explore. So it was a bit of fun and games on top of the hard work.

In the end, each student learned a great deal about business, production, and Korea. Feel free to quiz them if you see them; CIS students are always prepared for a pop quiz! But they had fun and built amazing memories as well while traveling in the capable and adept hands of the CIS staff escorting them.
