Student Council: Taking Responsibility to Build Community

Student Council: Taking Responsibility to Build Community

Written by Dr. Dooley

The CTBC CIA High School Student Council met this week with their mentor, Mr. Robertson, to discuss their plans for the future, including the upcoming Halloween Event on November 1st. Although the Student Council Board is made up exclusively of high school students, the event will help build camaraderie between all members of the school community, from elementary students up to junior high students, high school students, and staff. Decorations, made by student volunteers, will create a festive atmosphere for the spooky and sweet celebration.

The Vice President, Thomas, led the meeting, organizing the responsibilities of board members, student volunteers, and participating clubs. The secretary, Amber, took notes, while treasurer Wesley dealt  with budgetary issues and receipt collection. The President, Joel, is responsible for liaising with club mentors and other members of the school community who will help to organize the event. President Joel says he hopes everyone will “Get excited!” about the special day.

The event will consist of several activity stations, including crafts like decorating pumpkins and concocting colorful, slimey ooblek. Student clubs will also offer sports challenges, and the culinary club will have special candied treats available. All attendees are encouraged to dress in costumes for the occasion.

Although the Halloween event was the most pressing item on the Student Council’s agenda this week, they also discussed their other plans for the year, including the creation of school stores. By offering students a chance to buy and sell their own products  on campus, the council aims to help students take responsibility over their educational environment, all while learning economic skills.
