It was a busy start to the semester for the CTBC International Academy Model United Nations (CIAMUN) team; or “Munions” as they are more casually known. The weekend after the first week back from winter break was the LINMUN conference hosted by Kang Chiao International School Linkou Campus, in New Taipei City. This past weekend, our students participated in the Yale Model United Nations Taiwan conference in Taipei. Although it was a busy time, our delegates found time to forge new friendships and of course solve some geopolitical issues with their peers.

Research and preparation are important elements of any Model UN conference.

The LINMUN conference in New Taipei was a smaller conference with committees ranging from 12-20 delegates. This was the first conference in which our junior high students had the opportunity to participate. Although it may have started slow and full of nerves for most of them, by the end of the conference, they had all achieved their speaking goals for the conference. At this conference, two students won the Best Delegate award for being the most outstanding delegate in their committee. We also had one honorable mention for a delegate for demonstrating excellent teamwork and collaboration skills. This was our largest delegation so far with 15 students participating.

The YMUNT conference in Taipei proved a challenge for our delegates as the debate format was a different style than they were used to working with. The conference was also quite large with committees of up to 40 delegates. Luckily, the Munions were able to quickly adapt and get involved in their committee discussions. The YMUNT conference also hosted a community fair with various NGOs, businesses, or student organizations sharing the work they are doing to better their communities on the first night, and a delegate dance on the second night. It was amazing to see the delegates find the energy to attend both events after long days of debating. All in all, this three day conference was exhausting, but rewarding.
