Blossoming Dreams: Grade 2’s Garden of Happiness
Written by Mr. O’Reilly
Inspired by the heartwarming tale The Garden of Happiness, where a community transforms a barren plot into a vibrant sanctuary, Grade 2 is embarking on an exciting project to create our very own Garden of Happiness.
In the story, a young girl plants a seed that blooms into a beautiful sunflower, sparking joy in her neighborhood. Motivated by this, our students are turning a small, weed-filled plot of land outside our classroom into a flourishing garden that reflects creativity, teamwork, and care for nature.
The plot, once overrun with stones and weeds, is now a canvas for our young gardeners. The students have taken on the responsibility of clearing the land, pulling weeds, and removing debris. With enthusiasm and determination, they are learning the value of hard work and perseverance as they transform the space. To help our plants thrive, we’re using compost created by the grade 4 students.
Our Garden of Happiness is not just about planting flowers—it’s a project that blends nature and creativity. Alongside gardening, they’re incorporating art projects using natural materials found on the plot, such as branches, stones, and wood. These materials are being transformed into sculptures, signs, and decorations to make our garden a unique and welcoming space. Through these activities, the children are learning about environmental stewardship, artistic expression, and the importance of working together toward a shared goal.
This project is teaching our Grade 2 students valuable life lessons. By tending to the garden, they’re developing a sense of responsibility as they water the plants and monitor their growth.
We hope our Garden of Happiness will become a space where everyone can feel inspired, just like the characters in the story. The students are excited to see their efforts bloom and are already dreaming of the colorful flowers and creative art pieces that will fill the garden.
This is a project that will unfold over the next few weeks, and we’re just getting started! Stay tuned to see the results as our Grade 2 class continues to clear, plant, and create during break times and beyond.
