Reaching for the Stars: The Star Zoo Comes to Life
Written by Mr. Medina
The Grade 4 students recently took audiences on an unforgettable journey through space with their performance of The Star Zoo, presented as part of their Language Arts class. Filled with music, creativity, and teamwork, the production showcased not only the students’ acting abilities but also the confidence and dedication they developed throughout the process.
Set in a future where Earth has become too polluted and too warm to support life, The Star Zoo follows a group of humans searching the galaxy for a new home. At the heart of the story is Hummingbird, a young girl who is expected to enter into a marriage she does not want. As the story unfolds, she discovers the courage to stand up for herself and choose her own path, reminding audiences of the importance of bravery, resilience, and believing in yourself.
The production began as part of the Grade 4 Language Arts curriculum, with the script specially adapted for the class. Students started learning the songs in May before moving into formal rehearsals at the beginning of June. Most rehearsals took place during class time, with a few additional lunchtime sessions to help prepare for performance day.
From the very beginning, students were encouraged to take an active role in the production. After learning about each character, they selected the roles they were most interested in portraying. They also helped choose costumes that reflected their characters, while several unique outfits, including the robot costumes, were specially created for the performance.
Preparing a musical production in a limited amount of time was no small task. Students had to learn both their scripts and songs while balancing their regular classwork. Their commitment was truly impressive, with many students even meeting online outside of school to rehearse together and support one another.
One of the most rewarding aspects of the project was seeing students grow in confidence. Some of the quietest members of the class discovered new ways to express themselves on stage, demonstrating courage and creativity in front of an audience. Through their teamwork, enthusiasm, and perseverance, the Grade 4 students made The Star Zoo a memorable production and a wonderful celebration of learning through the performing arts.
