Proactive PSAT Prep
Written by Mr. James
This week at CIS, students in Grades 7, 8, and 9 continued building important academic skills through preparation for the PSAT 8/9, an internationally recognized standardized assessment that measures students’ abilities in English and Mathematics. The PSAT (Preliminary SAT) is designed to help students understand their current academic level, identify strengths and areas for improvement, and prepare for future external exams. Many international schools use the PSAT as a benchmark to guide instruction and support students in reaching global academic standards.
At CIS, we are committed to supporting students throughout this process. Over the recent spring break, students in Grades 7–9 were given the opportunity to take a full PSAT 8/9 practice test home. This allowed them to work at their own pace, reflect on challenging questions, and begin developing test-taking strategies independently. By engaging with the test in a low-pressure environment, students could build familiarity and confidence before formal testing.
This week, the focus shifted toward reviewing and deepening understanding. Grade 8 and Grade 9 students began preparing for their upcoming official test later this month. On Tuesday morning, these students visited the computer lab to download the Bluebook testing application, the official digital platform used for the PSAT and SAT. During this session, students followed clear instructions to ensure their devices were ready for test day. They confirmed that their devices could connect to Wi-Fi, understood the importance of having a fully charged device for a 3–4 hour testing period, and were reminded to bring chargers if needed. This preparation is an essential step in ensuring a smooth and stress-free testing experience.
Meanwhile, Grade 7 students focused on building foundational skills. While they continued working independently on English and Math sections of the practice test, they were also offered valuable one-on-one support. Teachers provided individualized guidance, helping students understand why their answers were correct or incorrect using detailed answer explanations. This personalized approach allowed students to “decode” the test, learn from mistakes, and strengthen critical thinking skills. For many Grade 7 students, this is their first exposure to the PSAT format, as they will take the test for the first time in October. These early experiences are designed to build confidence and reduce anxiety ahead of their first official attempt.
Across all grade levels, the goal remains the same: to help students grow. The PSAT is a challenging assessment, but it offers meaningful insights into each student’s academic development. By using this data, teachers can better tailor instruction, and students can set clear goals for improvement.
At CIS, we believe that success comes from preparation, support, and perseverance. Through structured practice, guided review, and ongoing encouragement, we are dedicated to helping every student reach their full potential.
