Grade 3 Science Erupts with Excitement!

Grade 3 Science Erupts with Excitement!

Written by Mr. Rabanal

Our Grade 3 students had an explosive week of learning as they took part in a hands-on science experiment—creating and erupting their very own volcanoes! As part of their science unit, students worked collaboratively in small groups to design and build their volcano models using simple plastic bottles and other simple materials.

Safety First!

Carefully adding the baking soda.

Once their volcanoes were complete, the excitement really began. Students gathered their team’s volcano and headed outside with Ms. Ryan to safely conduct their experiment. One by one, each group prepared their volcano for eruption by adding baking soda in turns, followed by vinegar carefully poured by Ms. Ryan. Within seconds, their models came to life, bubbling and overflowing just like real volcanic eruptions!

To make the experience even more engaging, Ms. Ryan added red food coloring to the mixture, creating a vivid lava effect that made each eruption even more dramatic and realistic. Students cheered, laughed, and eagerly watched as each volcano reacted differently, sparking curiosity and discussion.

Beyond the excitement, this activity helped students understand basic chemical reactions in a fun and memorable way. It also encouraged teamwork, observation, and prediction, as students discussed what might happen before each eruption and reflected on the results afterward.

This unforgettable experience brought science to life in a meaningful way. Great work to our Grade 3 scientists for their creativity, teamwork, and enthusiasm!

It has erupted!
