CHILD SERVICE

Mother-Child Companion Program

Childhood is often pictured with playgrounds, picture books, and the comfort of home. Yet for some children, the first years of life unfold in a place defined by bars and gates. Inside prison, a small group of mothers care for their babies and toddlers, doing their best to nurture them within the limited environment. Under such resigned conditions, when mothers serve sentences while raising infants and toddlers, the challenge of nurturing healthy development becomes profound.
The Mother-Child Program responds to this need by offering education, care, and companionship for children ages 0–3 who live with their mothers in jail. By creating spaces for learning and connection, the program helps protect childhood even in the most difficult settings.

At CIA, our student-led club is fortunate to have the opportunity to support this effort. We are committed to strengthening the Mother-Child Companion Program by interacting with children, channeling resources, and reminding ourselves that compassion should extend even to the most hidden corners of society. Within the setting of school, we hope to share our opportunities and resources with the wider community and to help build a more promising childhood.

Sustainability/ Consistency:
This effort requires patience and persistence. Each month, students visit the Taoyuan Women’s Prison (桃園女子監獄) to interact with and play games with the children. Through consistent involvement, we aim to establish a stable presence that contributes to sustainable growth for the families.

Impact
Our primary goal is not only to raise awareness but to help address real challenges. We hope that through our efforts, children can receive more complete care and warmth from family, encouraging mothers to recognize the value of building a better life for their children, and in turn, for themselves.

Connection
As students, we are reminded that education also gives us the ability to give back to society in meaningful ways. We come to value the opportunities and environment that shape our own lives. With these experiences, we connect our roles as students with a broader purpose, caring for others, and building a more compassionate community.

We hope through this club we could invite students who are also passionate and willing to work together and support this community through our own hands and efforts.
