Building tomorrow’s leaders
CIA Students at South Taiwan Model United Nations conference
Written by Mr. Delpeche
A group of students from CTBC International School had the exciting opportunity to participate in the South Taiwan Model United Nations (STMUN) conference, hosted by I-Shou International School in Kaohsiung. Led by Mr. Torrance, the group set off on Friday evening, enjoying a dinner at the Eda Outlet Mall before heading to their hotel to rest and prepare for the busy day ahead.
The conference, held on December 7th, centered on the theme *Waving the Flag of Justice: The Forefront to an Era of Progression.* Participants were challenged to explore concepts of global justice and progress while developing solutions for ongoing conflicts and humanitarian crises. After an intensive day of debates and collaboration, the students relaxed at a social event with games and live music, a welcome break from their rigorous work.
On Sunday, the students focused on drafting resolutions. The committees worked diligently to address pressing global issues through their proposals, engaging in productive debates and collaborative teamwork. When they returned to Tainan, everyone was tired but proud of their accomplishments.
Joel, a Grade 12 student who has participated in two MUN conferences, reflected on how rewarding the weekend was. “It’s amazing how much fun debating can be. After drafting the resolutions and proposing solutions to global problems, we worked through debates to ensure they aligned with our country’s agenda,” he shared.
Tini, a Grade 10 student, also had a positive experience: “The conference was fantastic. I met so many new people, and it was a great way to learn from others and exchange ideas.”
STMUN offered students a valuable opportunity to develop essential diplomacy, negotiation, and collaboration skills. Beyond debating world issues, these conferences help students build lifelong skills and connections. The students’ success comes from their dedicated participation in weekly meetings under Mr. Torrance’s guidance.
Phil, a Grade 10 student, shared, “MUN is both challenging and creative. It helps you become a better communicator and teaches you to express your ideas confidently in formal settings, all while forming meaningful friendships.”
Young, another Grade 10 participant, said, “I was amazed by the brilliant ideas shared by people from different backgrounds. It was inspiring to see how diverse perspectives could unite to create meaningful solutions.”
The experience deepened students’ understanding of global issues while helping them build valuable skills and connections for their future. Looking ahead to future MUN events, we are proud of our students’ growth and dedication to becoming informed and engaged global citizens. We look forward to sharing more updates as the team continues its journey in Model UN!
